Cash Assistance for Veterans

Veterans can get help with rent, food and heating costs through programs that are available in the United States. There may be occasions when veterans require cash assistance to pay for their additional living expenses. Cash assistance is available through some government programs and other organizations. These programs are helpful if you need extra help.

Veterans who receive cash assistance through welfare programs do not need to pay it back. This is not a loan but rather a gift that helps those in need. Cash assistance can be used to cover a variety of expenses including food, transportation and clothing. You may be required to submit proof of your identity, address and income depending on where you apply for cash assistance.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

Veterans with at least one minor child dependent may be eligible for cash assistance under TANF. The federal government funds the program, which is offered across the country. The amount of the cash grant is determined by the number of people living in your household and the income level. Cash assistance can be used for a wide range of living costs. You must be a legal immigrant or a US citizen with a low-income to be eligible for the TANF.

In many states, you can either apply online or in person at the local social services office. In most states, you are only allowed to receive the benefit for 60 months during your lifetime as an adult. To continue receiving TANF, some states require you to participate in a training program. Some states also offer a one-time payment of cash assistance to those who don’t have dependent minor children. They may also provide a one-time payment to grandparents raising their grandchildren.

General Assistance (GA)

The program is funded by the federal government and available in many states. The program is similar to TANF, but it doesn’t require you to have a minor child as a dependent to apply. The GA program is available to anyone with a low-income, regardless of whether they’re single, married or have children. The program offers short-term monthly assistance and one-time cash payments to those who qualify. Cash assistance can be used for a wide range of living costs. You can apply at your local office of social services, or in many states you can apply online.
